GEJ to Nigerians-You would praise me when I leave office

President Jonathan says Nigerians will praise and appreciate him more when he leaves office. He said all the criticisms he has received from Nigerians so far is expected of any serving leader. He said it's only when leaders leave office that people will begin to see and appreciate their good works.

Pres. Jonathan made this remark while receiving the state Governor Dickson Seriake and traditional rulers from Bayelsa state at the Presidential villa in Abuja today December 30th

"I always say that I will not even expect praises now because hardly do people praise serving leaders. It is when you leave, people will begin to know. When you leave, people will begin to compare what you have done over the period vis-a-vis what others have done, then they will compare you with whoever takes over.

Probably that is the time some people will begin to say good about you. But I will do my best to make sure that we do change things. We are trying to create enabling environment for our economy to thrive irrespective of the challenges we are having in the petroleum sector and the security challenges we have. I will do my best so that by the time I will leave, you will be able to say that when our son was there, he served the country well so that one day, another son of Bayelsa may be given another opportunity to serve Nigerians", he said.

FG declares January 2nd 2015 as public holiday

The Federal Government has declared January 2nd 2015 as public holiday to mark Eid el Maloud celebration. In a statement released today by the Minister of Interior affairs, Abba Moro, the Federal government asked Muslim faithfuls to offer prayers to God for the peace and Unity of Nigeria.

Seven Boko Haram members die in explosive-laden van in Borno

Seven Boko Haram members were killed after explosives placed in a van exploded at the Chikwarki market in Biu, Borno state on Monday December 29th.

"A Toyota pick-up van, loaded with maize and beans with IED hidden under them, belonging to Boko Haram insurgents, exploded near Chikwarkir village of Biu, killing all the occupants of the van. As you know, it is harvest time and people are taking their farm produce to the market; but thank God, the bomb exploded before they could get to the market,” a security source told Punch newspaper.

Only those who love hunger will vote Jonathan - APC VP candidate Osinbajo

Vice Presidential Candidate of the APC, Prof Yemi Osibajo says it is only Nigerians who love hunger that will return the present administration into office in 2015. He said this at a town hall meeting for artisans, tradesmen and farmers organised by the Lagos state government at the state secretariat yesterday December 30th 2015.

“No one is ignorant of all that is happening to us in this country. No one likes hunger and poverty; but people are hungry. In 2015, only those who love to continue to be hungry would prefer that the government in power at the centre remains there. By God’s grace, we would remove them from the seat of power. The people there presently cannot do anything, because they don’t know how to. They lack the capacity and capability to govern the country. I pray for the farmers and artisans that the Lord will bless us in the incoming year.” he said

AirAsia flight found upside down at the bottom of the sea, passengers found holding hands

Indonesian search officials have now confirmed they have located the fuselage of AirAsia flight 8501 on sonar radar, upside down on the sea floor, not far from where three of the bodies from the doomed AirAsia flight were found holding hands when discovered floating in the Java Sea. Officials from Basarnas, Indonesia's search and rescue agency, say the plane wreckage has been located in 24 to 30 metres of water and one of the seven confirmed recovered bodies was wearing a life jacket.

Lieutenant Airman Tri Wobowo, who was co-piloting Indonesia's C130 Herclues aircraft, was the first to discover debris from the plane and witnessed the tragic scene.

'There were seven to eight people. Three of them held hands,' he told a local newspaper.

A plane door, a blue suitcase, oxygen tank and the remnants of an emergency slide were among the objects found about 10km from where the plane was last detected on radar. But the most harrowing discoveries were the corpses floating in the Java Sea - about 100 miles off the coast - and search chiefs fully expect none of the 162 passengers and crew on board made it out of the wreckage alive.

Family members who have been at the airport since the crash happened on Sunday December 28th, are expected to come forward to identify the remains of their loved ones.

Corruption, Mis-used BillionsI'm Not EFCC... Don't Expect Me To Probe Past Administrations — UNN VC

Even as many questions remain unanswered with regards to missing and misused funds, running into billions, at UNN, the present VC has come out to say it is not his duty to probe past administrations because he is not an EFCC official.

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria Nsukka, (UNN), Professor Benjamin Ozumba, has said he will focus on developing the institution rather than probe past administrations.

Acknowledging the presence of many abandoned projects at UNN, pointers to past fund mismanagement and possible corruption, Ozumba said his duties as a Vice Chancellor do not make him an anti-graft official, Vanguard reports.

"I am not a probe panel and nobody should expect me to probe administrations before me because I don't have the mandate to do so and you should know that I am not the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC)," Ozumba said.

The VC said he will ensure that the projects are concluded, promising to source for the needed funds.

"I will only source funds to complete the stranded projects and continue to sustain the activities of the institution," he said.

"We are already in the process of completing some of the projects and very soon we shall put them to use".

Corruption At UNN

A few months back, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) revealed that it was "investigating the former UNN Vice Chancellor", Professor Bartho Okolo and some of the institution's top officials who worked with him during his tenure.

Also, in a petition to the EFCC, the the South Eastern Zone of the Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO) alleged that Okolo awarded "contracts running into billions of naira to non-existing companies" and urged "urgent and thorough investigation", especially because a lot of the contracts remain unexecuted.

Corruption: Fight Or Ignore It?

If anyone argues that it is unacceptable for a sitting VC to say "I am not the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission" as an excuse to look the other way.

They would not be wrong because it could be argued that one of the reasons why corruption still thrives in Nigeria is that people accused of corrupt acts are often giving no more than a slap on the hand.

This trend encourages others to try it out.

Therefore, the UNN VC owes it to posterity to ensure that he does all that he can to, not only probe, but ensure that those found guilty are punished in accordance with the law.

Failing that, he has lent himself to the corruption machinery.

The ban of hijab in Lagos Public institutions may cost the APC its political position in the state if the threat by Muslims students is anything to go by.

The Muslim Students Society of Nigeria (MSSN), Lagos State Area Unit, has vowed to vote out the All Progressives Congress (APC) come 2015, in reaction to last Friday's High Court judgement upholding the ban of hijabs in public schools in the state.

Justice Grace Onyeabo of the Ikeja High Court had in her judgement dismissed the suit by two teenage members of the group challenging the ban.

She argued that the ban is not discriminatory and does not violate sections 38 and 42 of the 1999 constitution, as claimed by the plaintiffs, since Nigeria operates a "non-faith based educational system".

But in a press statement by its President, Alhaji Kaamil Kalejaiye, the group said the judgement is a "rape" of the law."

It is shameful that the judge denied us a right that is not only Godly but constitutionally stated," Kalejaiye said.

In a political twist, Kalejaiye accused Fashola's APC government of being anti-Islamic, while promising that the group will continue "moves to get female pupils dress accordingly because it is their right".

"This is one of the evils that has continued to dominate the Raji Fashola’s administration," he said, hinting a political payback.

"By Allah’s will, the Governor and his anti-Islamic and oppressive policies will not be allowed to stay"

"Categorically, muslim students in Lagos are the worst hit by most of his policies and Allah’s willing in 2015, any party who has continuously denied us of using Hijab will be denied our votes.

It will be recalled that a law student of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto (UDUS), Abdulbaqi Aliyu Jari Katsina, also urged a rethink and accused Fashola of being intolerant and blasphemous in allowing the ban.

The students' lawyer has also said an appeal is on the way..

Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State has said that he has no plans to be the running mate of former Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari in the 2015 Presidential elections.

Fashola said this in reaction to recent rumours hinting that he would contest at Buhari’s side for the position of Vice President.

The governor, speaking during an October 19 ceremony to commemorate his 2700th day in office, stated that he had only attended Buhari’s official declaration because he was personally invited.

He said:

“My presence at Buhari’s declaration was because he came to Lagos to personally deliver an invitation letter to me. It was a pointer that I respect him. It was a pointer that it was an APC event. And it was pointer that I went to a party event.”

Buhari and former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar are expected to go head to head for the ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) but neither of them has named a running mate......

All we want is good leadership, irrespective of the candidate.
