Law students Society, UNILORIN branch, 20th Edition of the Annual Law journal "THE JURIST" Launched in honour of Mr.Layi Babatunde {SAN},Editor in chief,Supreme Law Reports.
A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Ogunde Wemimo has submitted that the reformation of yesterday is to definitely ensure better tomorrow. The SAN made this submission recently while delivering lecture at the Public Presentation of the 20th Annual Journal of the Law Students’ Society of the University of Ilorin, (Unilorin). “THE JURIST” Essay in honour of Mr. Layi Babatunde (SAN) Editor in Chief Judgment of the Supreme Court (S.C. Reports). The event featured presentation of the Law Students’ Society Journal.
In the lecture, entitled: “The three days of a Lawyer life” He said that the journey of life is in three phases the Yesterday, today and the future. He said, “Yesterday consist of the degree of errors both from the bar and the bench some of these error s might have resulted in convictions, deprivation of settled rights and some acts of misfortune. He stressed that the beauty of today is that it prevent a repetition of perpetration of such error bringing about new life for tomorrow which are evident in law reforms, judicial activisms and intellectual reviews. He added that there must be constant reflection on yesterday both at an individual and institutional level.”
He noted “The legal and judicial system must constantly face the scrutiny that every yesterday deserves, when there is no confrontation of our yesterday by our today becomes sterile and with the sterility hides unfold danger not just for the lawyer and the individual but also for the institution and system in which we participate.” He stressed “the Lawyer who is today seeks a reformation of yesterday must definitely expect a better tomorrow which will come not by prophecy but by diligence.”
In his address, the Dean of the Faculty of law, Dr. Arowosaiye described the honoree as a “Role model and personality guided by justice and as a man of laudable achievements and indelible footprints.” The Dean pointed out that the faculty is in excellence shape and vibrant has seen recently with the resounding verdict by the council of legal education in which University of Ilorin Faculty of law described “the best in the country” in the August 2014 Bar Examinations of the Nigerian Law School by being the first among Top five Nigerian Universities. He said that the Faculty of law is well determined to sustain the achievements. The Dean of Law hence, urged the Final Year Law Students to maintain the achievements. In his address, the President Law Students’ Society lmran Mujeeb described the honoree as world class lawyer whose credibility and laudable achievements has distinguished him to deserve the honour.
The Deputy Vice Chancellor (Management Services) Prof. Y.M Fakunle said that the Faculty of Law have done the University Proud for the past three Years. He Stressed that this has shown in the Students resounding performance in the Bar final Examinations of the Nigerian Law School since the Past three Years. He commended the Law Student for their laudable achievements and Intellectual Dynamism. He thus urged the Law Students to sustain the success.
In his remarks, the Chairman, Hon. Justice Isa Ayo Salami (Former President Court of Appeal). He commended the laudable achievements of the honoree towards development of law in the country. He noted “Law profession seek not for money but seek to maintain law and order in the society.” He thus, admonished the law students to bear this in mind and be conscious of their roles in the Society which include defending the rights of the people.
In his address, the honoree pointed out that the students are preparing themselves while in school to belong to the team that will make a different in the country. He stressed that the law Profession aim to ensure the well being of the society. This the University is preparing the Students towards.
The event was graced by dignitaries including the honoree Mr Layi Babatunde, Chairman Hon. Justice Isa Ayo Salami, Prof. Y.M Fakunle, who represented Vice Chancellor Prof. Abdul Ganiyu Ambali and the Dean of the Faculty of Law Dr. Arowosaiye. Others include, Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association as well as members of the Bar and the Bench from without and within Kwara State.
